On October  23rd we had our 18th workshop on Medical and Dental School application. Dr. Silverman presented a workshop on “How to get scholarships that will turn your complaint application in an outstanding one”. Special invited speaker was Mrs Sandra Ngoh- Fonseka, Marketing Manager at Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board who presented a wonderful slideshow about Malaysia from natural treasures to culinary gems, from beautiful beaches to amazing cultural escapes Malaysia is sure to marvel all visitors. In the last part of the workshop Joana Dida, team leader for Models of Human Diseases who was accepted this year in the MD/PhD program at University of Toronto shared her journey to medical school. Joana shared tips, advice and graciously answered so many questions students had!

On October 18 we had our 17th workshop on Medical and Dental School application. Dr. Silverman presented a workshop on “How to get the best letters of reference for your application”, while Dr. Nazir Umrani, Assistant Program Director of Clinical Science and Irene Garcia, Admission coordinator for Canada presented the medical program of Xavier University School of Medicine.

Breast cancer awareness month-Flowers for diseases project

Models of Human Diseases (https://modelsofdiseases.wordpress.com/) has initiated the Flowers for disease project with monthly awareness campaigns dedicated to a diseases and a flower symbol! Each month pre-med or medical student team leadersof Models of Diseases create brochures and lead an awareness campaign for one disease. We end the month of October with Breast cancer awareness campaign and the beautiful pink rose as a symbol of women beauty and hope after having the  brain tumour awareness month and its hope flower-the almond blossoms. We ended the month of September with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and the lotus flower. Earlier in September we had Alzheimer’s awareness month with its delicate and fragile flower Forget-Me-Not. In August we acknowledge Skin cancer with sunflower as symbol. If you want to support our campaign forward the brochure to friends and family, take pictures of lotus flowers and share them and the brochure with a few words about Models of Diseases Flower for Diseases project. Thank you! During the 2010 International Conference Models of Human Diseases we had ALS awareness and cornflower as symbol and we gave away seeds for participants to plant in their garden and take pictures. Thank you to our team leaders Julieta Lazarte, Asha Sardar, Basma Chamas, Usman Saeed, Mima Markicevic, Morrison Steel, and Thiviyanath Sellathurai who have contributed up to now to Flowers for Diseases project and have created the awareness brochures!
